  • Impenetrable Labyrinths

Impenetrable Labyrinths recall successive waves of conquistadores, surveyors, and photographers who have all laid claim to the landscape of the American West. Many generations of immigrants have followed alongside, courted by the promise of prosperity and freedom. But the path to the American Dream can be challenging. The roads through steep and arid canyons and gorges mirror the immigrant journey. Photographing them represents an attempt to claim the land and the promise of that nation as well. The resulting images tear apart and rebuild the landscape revealing seemingly impenetrable labyrinths of earth and stone. They provide a first-person glimpse of the awestruck outsider embarking on a harrowing migration, whether to the United States or elsewhere.
